Kalevala – The Finnish National Epic

The first edition of the Kalevala appeared in 1835. It was compiled and edited by Elias Lönnrot on the basis of the epic folk poems he had collected in Finland and Karelia.

The Kalevala marked an important turning-point for Finnish-language culture.

The Kalevala has been translated into more languages than any other work of Finnish literature. It has been translated into 51 languages.

The Kalevala has left its mark on many areas of Finnish life: The names of city quarters, streets, businesses and products draw continually on the distinctiveness of the Kalevala. http://www.kalevalakoru.fi/

The most powerful influence on Kalevala illustrations has been artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The most famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius also received inspiration from Kalevala.

Famous Finnish composer

Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)

Listen:
Tuonelan joutsen / The Swan of Tuonela

Famous Finnish painter
Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931)

The Canine Kalevala is written by Mauri Kunnas. The national epic, now in Kunnas's fun canine style: http://www.maurikunnas.net/default.cfm?template=bookview&firstbook=646&cd=2003
